I love using food as a preventative tool. We often forget food is medicine. It may not work like they tell us in school how a medicines efficacy is determined. What they don’t tell us is over time we may prevent disease by choosing good quality fresh foods…especially veggies and fruits. Garlic is one of them.
Basically, garlic contains allin and the enzyme allicinase which convers allin to the beneficial component allicin. Allicin is thought to be possibly effective in the prevention of high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Two of our biggest leaders towards heart disease.
I love to eat/drink what is healthy and delicious. I’ve taken the green tea blueberry infusion recipe from Dr. Weil’s new book, “Fast Food. Good Food,” made it easier, and even more delicious. Why do I think everyone should drink this every day?
1. Blueberries are a source of anthocyanin pigments (a type of flavonoid) resulting in amazing anti-inflammatory properties. If you didn’t know, most of the preventable diseases we’re seeing in our friends and loved ones are due to inflammation. Eating fruits and vegetables decreasing your risk for these diseases.

I have been on the lookout for clean products and slowly replacing them as I go. Let me tell you it can feel like quite a hunt to find the one that’s just right. Well I found my new favorite deodorant. I know it doesn’t come in a regular stick but I think there’s an added benefit to this.
There’s a little stick in the jar which you use to scoop up what you will use and then you use your hand to rub it under your armpit. The benefit? Well you know how we’re supposed to regularly check the girls? You’re actually supposed to check your armpits too. If you conscientiously check while you rub, you already have half of the check over with. Plus, this deodorant actually works and contains great ingredients. My favorite is lavender sage but it comes in four other varieties as well. Go ahead. Try it and enjoy!
Ok, I know genetic testing can be a bit confusing and frightening. I’m gonna give you a basic overview. There’s three genes now that can be tested which may increase your risk of developing cancer if you have them. BRCA1, BRCA2 (cleverly name after BReast CAncer), and PALB2 (Partner And Localizer of BRCA).
When working normally these genes actually keep breast cells growing normally and will actually prevent cancer cell growth, but when there is a mutation in one or more of these genes they do not function optimally and may increase your risk of developing breast cancer.
I’m used to being busy. We all are. We’re pharmacy students, but it’s been a long time since I’ve had a regular work schedule. I bet many of you are in the same boat. With this comes the responsibility of figuring out how to feed ourselves on the fly. We’re still busy but don’t have the same luxury to grab a quick bite to eat while we we’re listening to our first lecture of the day. Instead we’re struggling to get ourselves and possibly little one’s ready and out the door while managing to make it to rotations at a reasonable time….that is if everything goes smoothly. Enter a week of pre-prepared breakfasts that only take about 5-10 minutes to make on Sunday.

The overnight, no-cook oatmeal is delicious. You prep it and put in the refrigerator to soak overnight. Easy! I usually only prep 3 days at a time so they don’t go bad and I ask my husband how many he’d like to have at the beginning of the week. Oh, you can eat it straight out of the fridge or warm it up. Whatever you prefer.
Frozen smoothie packs are super simple and since they’re frozen you don’t have to worry them going bad. That means you can prep a week worth of nutrient dense deliciousness all ready to pour in the blender and enjoy on your commute. Little ones love them too! Just adapt them to your taste buds. Being a pharmacy student is quite an honor. It’s not something to take lightly. For all of us who were accepted, there are many who were not. Congratulations on your acceptance. Now comes 3 years of hard work and sacrifice. I’m on the final lap of journey with only rotations left. I’d like to offer you a few tools I wish I would have known at the beginning of the program. 1. The last week-and-a-half have made me feel uncomfortable to say the least. I’ve been in skills labs completing the labs the campus students have already finished. We go to labs once in the morning and once in the afternoon with each session having 4-30minute activities to complete in 2 hours.
Sometimes I’ve panicked. Sometimes I felt confident. Other times felt discouraged and just went through the motions. Overall, it has stretched me and helped me practice how to collect myself as a professional. It was interesting to see.
My journey began long before I started pharmacy school. I knew when I was a little girl I would pursue a career which would require an advanced degree. I did not know what it was, how to get there, how long it would take, or how many tears would be shed along the way. It’s been a long journey with many people to thank along the way.
First Bachelor’s Degree: After high school, I pretty much went out swinging blindfolded. I ended up with a bachelor’s from a Bible college. While there though, I saw one of the professors being awarded for receiving her doctorate. She was so well put together, polished, and proud and I thought to myself one day I will do that too.
Second Bachelor’s Degree: I went back to school and received a bachelor’s in cell and molecular biology. Trust me, it was hard but there was an amazing amount of confidence that was built during this time. I have to particularly thank Dr. Christopher Field for believing in me. For some reason he chose me to teach his genetics labs. I can’t tell you how much my confidence grew because of this experience. Thank you for listening to me, loaning me your handkerchief, pushing me to forge on, writing my letter of recommendation, and for being family to me.
We need different amount of vitamins and different times in our lives. These multivitamins are separated by under 50 and 50+ and have various amounts of tablets depending on how much you want. Oh, and if you can’t stand swallowing vitamins there’s a gummy choice for you. It looks great! No artificial dyes. It does have glucose syrup to make it sweet enough to chew but I would take it myself.
I always use this prenatal DHA (fish oil) because it actually has more DHA (the source most available for our bodies) than EPA and its low in mercury. The one thing to be careful of is fish oil can interact with some medicines. Feel free to ask me to run a check on your medicines to make sure there are no interactions. Tip: Store them in the refrigerator or freezer to help prevent the fishy burps and aftertaste.
